Live Well Omaha Kids continues to celebrate Every Kid Healthy™ Week, April 25-29. We’re recognizing some of our Partners for Healthy Schools members and today we’re spotlighting Jefferson Elementary. Their Assistant Principal, K. Sue Hubbs, tells us what they’re currently doing to promote school health and wellness.
Jefferson School has taken the challenge to help students, and staff, get more fit! The following things are in place to promote that challenge:
- Water dispenser station in the hallway
- Physical Education Classes at least 50 minutes a week
- Outside track to walk
- Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program (twice a week)
- Pyramid Man presented by the Rose Theater
- Go Noodle activities in all classrooms
- 15-minutes Recess
- Dental Teaching (Grade 1)
- Lice Teaching (Grade 3)
- Tobacco Lessons (Grade 3)
- Human Growth and Development for grades 4 – 6
- Healthy Breakfast and Lunch Choices
- Nutrition Facts on lunch menus
- Healthy drink options in the vending machines (staff lounge)
- No “treats” for student birthdays
- Healthy Snacks for celebrations
- 5-4-3-2-1 Go!®
- Flu Shots for staff
- District Health Survey
- Mini-health Fair during Summer School

How can you get involved locally in promoting a healthy lifestyle for kids? Check out Partners for Healthy Schools. The purpose of Partners for Healthy Schools is to connect schools to a number of funding opportunities, educational materials and expert resources that help them take action toward creating healthier environments for students. Teachers, staff, and parents discuss key wellness topics and learn from experts as well as peers, ultimately committing to making sustainable changes in healthy eating and active living at their schools. Every Kid Healthy™ Week is an annual observance created to celebrate school health and wellness achievements and recognized on the calendar of National Health Observances. Observed the last week of April each year, this special week shines a spotlight on the great efforts our school partners are doing to improve the health and wellness of their students and the link between nutrition, physical activity, and learning – because healthy kids learn better! Everyone in the country can get involved and be a part of the celebration to help support sound nutrition, regular physical activity and health-promoting programs in schools.
