It’s National School Lunch Week (Oct. 15-19) and Live Well Omaha Kids would like to say thank you to all of the school staff in the Metro who ensure students are fed and ready to learn.

Did you know… President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962.

The 2018 NSLW theme is “School Lunch: Lots 2 Love”, and it’s all about showing off the secrets to your school lunch success in your schools and districts—The National School Lunch Program serves more than 30 million children every school day—that’s something to love!

Today we are spotlighting Omaha Public Schools’ Nutrition Services Director Tammy Yarmon. Ms. Yarmon has been in her role since 2000 and at OPS overall since 1990. She works hard to support exciting ways to provide breakfast and lunch to OPS students. Recent examples include:

  • Breakfast 2.0, which gives 800 students at South High the opportunity to eat a mid-morning meal
  • Omaha Public Schools celebrated Fire Prevention Week by inviting local firefighters to lunch during the week of October 7 – 12.  Over 45 elementary schools participated this year. The celebration has been an annual event since 2005.

When asked about National School Lunch Week, Ms. Yarmon said: “It’s my office and school staff who are real heroes.”
