Live Well Omaha Kids (under the direction of Live Well Omaha) has secured funding to implement the ‘Partners for Healthy Schools’ program in partnership with Omaha Public Schools. Partners for Healthy Schools is a school wellness policy program that works with area schools at the building level. The project connects schools wellness providers together in order to support healthy eating and physical activity policy and practice development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as assist in supporting environmental changes that support whole child health.

Our Youth Wellness Coordinator, Claire, will be working alongside five Omaha elementary schools throughout the 2019 – 2020 school year. Three schools; Gateway, Gomez, and Miller Park, have already started to analyze their current school wellness culture in order to begin formulating strengths and weaknesses based on their analyses. The identified weaknesses will then be used to draft several action steps as a part of a larger “Health Improvement Plan” for implementation beginning in the fall. Spring Lake and King Elementary will also be jumping in on the process soon.

We know that healthy kids are happier and perform better in school.  Partnering with OPS schools to support the work they are already doing with wellness provides a wonderful avenue to collaboratively work together to make a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our Omaha kids!  Live Well Omaha Kids is able to provide funding and training to support schools in this very important venture. And in turn, we are grateful to work with such involved and caring staff at these Omaha schools that are excited to implement change!

Stay tuned and follow along for updates on the project!
